Jessica's Friday Five

Jessica's Friday Five: Grayscale at sunset, sleep gummies, and a YouTube feature I just learned about

Published 2 months ago • 3 min read

Hi Reader,

It's been a week of big moments in my world - a close friend's mother passed away, my daughter got braces, we bought a 2nd car after years of being a single-car family, and it was the anniversary of my younger brother passing away unexpectedly 9 years ago. I am heading to Texas this weekend to support a family member for a series of medical specialist appointments and it's unclear whether I'll be there for 3 days or quite a bit more. Ramadan began without the joy for many celebrating given the war that is devastating families in Gaza and Israel. Life is being very life-y, in other words, for so many of us. Staying present and grateful for all the love I've got in my life that makes these feelings so real. Let's get to your Friday Five, shall we?

  1. Karaoke on YouTube - Apologies if everyone on the planet already knew about this before me, but did you know that you can find pretty much any karaoke song you'd ever want on YouTube in a karaoke-friendly format with streaming lyrics and background music?! I learned this the fun way on a trip with friends to Sedona last month. We had a blast. Apparently Apple Music has something similar. Have fun!
  2. Easter with kids - If you're celebrating Easter later this month and looking for activities to do with kids, here's a list of ideas. You can scroll to page 2 for the materials and books to consider, and then through the full document for various activity ideas from which to choose.
  3. Grayscale at sunset - I've set this up on my phone - at sunset, my phone turns into grayscale mode. It makes it a lot less interesting to look at, so I tend to spend less time scrolling on it. Since I definitely not looking back on days and weeks and saying, "Wow that was a great week because I was looking at social media", this is helping me to spend my time in ways that are better for my needs.
  4. Joyfully Managed Worklife - the first cohort of 16 members of my group program to get more organized at work was more than I ever could have imagined. It was a blast for me and the feedback was strong from participants. One participated shared, "I wanted to share that this series has really helped me to unlock a new place within myself--I am still trying to put my finger on it. I have taken other courses and spent time with weekly planning and project management tools before. There's something about your candor, tone, presentation decks and built in work blocks that has been magic for me! I literally have been calmer than usual amidst several very compacted weeks. Thank you. I am feeling so grateful to be working with you!" I can't wait for the next group to start. Get on the waitlist if you want to be notified first!
  5. Super affordable sleep gummies: I started using FOCL products a few years back on a friend's recommendation for sleep, and then I've also become a big fan of their calm and focus products too. I realized this week when I was sharing about them in my group program that if you combine Rakuten + FOCL you can get the gummies for a really low price. I got the sleep gummies for my sister at Christmas and she posted on social: "If you have trouble falling asleep, I can’t recommend these enough. I have the hardest time calming my mind and falling asleep. I got these about a week before Christmas from Jessica and it’s been a game changer for me. Wanted to share in case anyone else is trying to find alternate methods to help with sleep." Here's what you do:
  • Sign up for a Rakuten account with my link (this gets you an extra $30 cash back).
  • From the Rakuten site, search for FOCL and click on the purple “Shop Now” button.
  • On the FOCL site, search for “Full Spectrum Sleep Gummies”.
  • Buy them for $54 (or less if you end up subscribing).
  • In May, Rakuten will send you $38.10 via Paypal or a paper check - this is the $30 cash back plus 15% of the sleep gummies you bought. So your gummies ended up costing just about $15. Then install the Rakuten browser app so it'll notify you when you're shopping on a site with cashback. Y'all they've sent me $3,683 in cash back since I joined in 2019 so it's not just pennies.

P.S. I'm participating in a few resource collections right now - the Dream.Decide.Rise Giveaway and the Moms Make Money: Productivity Edition are both ending on Tuesday. You can get my "Polish Week" Course in the first and my Masterclass on creating a Daily and Weekly List to stay organized at home in the second. For free! Enjoy.

Hi Reader, This weekend is a celebration of Mother's Day in the US. As someone who lost my mother last month, I'm sending love to you however this holiday is feeling for you. Here's what I won't be doing: playing flag football. My son's flag football league invited moms to join a flag football team for practices all this week and then a series of 4 games this weekend, culminating in a mom's flag football championship on Sunday. If I were to list 10,000 things I'd like to do for Mother's Day,...

Hi Reader, I hope your May is going okay so far. This week, my friend shared some wisdom with me that I wanted to pass along to all of you. As you might have read, my mom passed away last month. One of the surprising aspects of grief for me has been how exhausted I feel all the time, and when I mentioned that, Jenna shared, "The harder you fight the exhaustion, the longer you'll be exhausted." What a simple and obvious truth. But somehow, it is very difficult to remember at the moment. Let's...
